Tropical Storm Gabrielle should strengthen over the weekend and Norwegian Escape is shortening her visit to Bermuda to stay out of the way.

New alerts have been issued in the northeast Atlantic as the second hurricane of the season crosses back over the basin.

After some struggles, Gabrielle is forecast to strengthen and bring wind, rain, and rough surf to Bermuda, with indirect impacts possible for the Caribbean and U.S. East Coast. A new threat may arise in the Caribbean.

Hurricane Gabrielle will make its closest approach to Bermuda later today. The center is forecast to track more than 150 miles offshore, but the storm will cause large, dangerous swells to impact the island.

Tropical storm force winds extend out from the center up to 140 miles. Gabrielle was struggling to strengthen last week due to wind shear and dry air. Now, the storm is moving over warm ocean waters with less wind shear, leading to rapid intensification over the past 24 hours.

The National Weather Service is also tracking two other systems in the Atlantic and a hurricane in the Pacific.

At 11 p.m. Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center issued an advisory stating that Category 4 Hurricane Gabrielle is in the Atlantic Ocean, 520 miles east-northeast of Bermuda and 1,635 miles west of the Azores. Packing maximum sustained winds of 130 mph, the hurricane is tracking to the east-northeast at 21 mph.

Hurricane Gabrielle has gotten its act together as it churns over the open waters of the central subtropical Atlantic, and forecasters say the storm has rapidly intensified into a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher).
