The New York Yankees did not have the upper hand in the Juan Soto negotiations, in the end, as Brian Cashman relayed at the Winter Meetings.

The Yankees declined to offer Juan Soto the cherry on top that would have been an on-the-house family suite at the Stadium — a Citi Field perk the Mets offered with their winning bid.

Mets owner Steve Cohen, on the other hand, was more than willing to give Soto a suite at Citi Field and got the deal done. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman was asked about the suite saga, and he essentially said that a player making that much should be OK paying for his own suite.

"I don't think the suite is a possession arrow one way or the other, especially when you're making that kind of money," Cashman said.

Reports circulated after Juan Soto made his decision in free agency that the Yankees weren't willing to give the outfielder a free suite for his family like the Mets did.

While the end result left a sour taste in the Yankees’ mouths, Cashman reiterated that he always knew Soto could leave after one season.

The Yankees have been linked to other major free agent starting pitchers, and have checked in on first baseman Pete Alonso.
