WASHINGTON (AP) — Competing at a tournament for the first time in more than a year, and in doubles for the first time in nearly three, Venus Williams hit a big serve on her initial delivery at the DC Open on Monday and, curiously, it was wiped out by a foot-fault call.
This ended Venus' 16-month hiatus. Venus will also compete in the singles on Tuesday against American Peyton Stearns. Her comeback match was attended by about 3,000 spectators, including NBA star Kevin Durant.
Venus William is back! The seven-time Grand Slam champion is in town for the Mubadala Citi D.C. Open tournament. This is the 45-year-old tennis star's first tournament in 16 months.
Venus Williams has accepted a wild-card invitation to play singles at the 2025 Mubadala Citi DC Open, which will start on July 19. The tournament will be the 45-year-old's first in over a year. Williams' last official match was the Miami Open back in March 2024. This will be Williams' first appearance in the DC Open since 2022.
