Tropical Storm Erin has officially formed in the Atlantic, and it could become the first hurricane of the season. The tropical storm formed on the morning of Monday, Aug. 11, and has maximum sustained winds near 45 mph, according to a public advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami.

Forecasters say Tropical Storm Erin is "moving quickly" as it strengthens and heads toward the western hemisphere, but U.S. weather officials say it's too early to tell what impact it will have.

Tropical Storm Erin formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean on Monday, forecasters said. The storm could strengthen to become the Atlantic's first hurricane of the season.
