Oregon finds itself near the top of another tragic list as the year comes to an end. The Beaver State had the eighth-largest population of homeless people on a given night in January 2024, according to a “point-in-time” count released by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development this week.

The number of homeless people counted across the country on a single night in January 2024 soared by 18% over a year-earlier count to 770,000 individuals, the Biden administration said Friday.

A new report by federal officials says homelessness is on the rise nationwide, up 18% as affordable housing remains out of reach for many people. It’s the highest recorded since reporting began in 2007.
