Anti-whaling activist Paul Watson has been released from prison in Greenland where he spent five months in custody, after Denmark rejected a Japanese request to extradite him. Mr Watson, 74, was detained by police when his ship docked in Greenland's capital, Nuuk last July.

Mr. Watson was facing extradition to Japan but was released after Denmark decided to reject the extradition request, his lawyer said.

Japan had asked Denmark to extradite Watson, who had been in custody in Greenland since his arrest this summer.

Paul Watson, an anti-whaling activist who found fame on the television show Whale Wars, was arrested in Greenland earlier this year under a Japanese arrest warrant.
