Europe has controlled the modern rivalry, but the tournament is back on American soil. The U.S. has won its last two Ryder Cups as the host.
At the Team Cup in January, where Great Britain and Ireland went up against Continental Europe, Donald ordered PA speakers to be set up. “U-S-A, U-S-A” chants were blasted out, as well as baby noises and coughs. On one par three, an American comedian was hired to hurl insults.
The first two days of the Ryder Cup (Friday, Saturday) are firmly entrenched in team-based golf. Golfers from the United States and Europe will compete in two sessions each day: foursomes (alternate shot) in the morning and four-ball (best ball) in the afternoon. Day 3, held Sunday, will see golfers compete head-to-head in singles matches.
One of the biggest challenges heading into the Ryder Cup matches is figuring whether golf might have the power to unite a divided country.
