The company and its Chinese parent invoked the First Amendment in urging the justices to step in before a deadline to sell or be shut down.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it will hear arguments next month over the constitutionality of the federal law that could ban TikTok in the United States if its Chinese parent company doesn't sell it.

TikTok asked the high court to temporarily block enforcement of a law that would ban the app unless it is sold to an American firm. The court isn’t immediately issuing that emergency relief but will give the platform the opportunity to make its case before its ban is set to take place on January 19.
