President Joe Biden on Monday established a national monument honoring the late FDR-era Labor Secretary Frances Perkins, the first woman to serve in a presidential Cabinet and a driving force behind Franklin D.

Far from the woods of Maine and the government buildings of Washington, Frances Perkins grew up at 18 Cottage St. in Worcester. She attended the Oxford Street School and Classical High School in Worcester (later merged into Doherty Memorial High School).

She served as secretary of labor for Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933 to 1945 and spearheaded reforms like Social Security and the 40-hour work week.
