LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Winter Storm Fern brought heavy snow and sleet to the Louisville area and southern Indiana this weekend. The snow began coming down Saturday afternoon and has no plans to stop through Sunday afternoon as bitter cold temperatures follow close behind.

As snow and sleet continued to fall in Southern Indiana, the Duke Energy Foundation announced Sunday it has awarded $55,000 in rapid response grants to local organizations

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for much of Indiana as the bulk of the heavy snow accumulation will hit Sunday.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for much of central and south Indiana beginning on Saturday, Jan. 24. For the state's southern counties, that advisory has been upgraded to a winter storm warning.

This weekend's winter storm is leaving people in southern Indiana to deal with a mix of sleet and snow.

They say this is to make sure the veterans focus on the trip.

Led by Cardell Bailey's 22 points, the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles defeated the Western Illinois Leathernecks 96-64 on Friday.

The Western Illinois Leathernecks (4-16) are traveling to Liberty Arena on Saturday where they will take on the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles (4-15).
