OTTAWA—Canada’s Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland quit the Liberal government cabinet Monday, a surprise departure that casts further doubts about how long Prime Minister Justin Trudeau can hold on to his job given the government’s deep unpopularity.

Trump's remarks come at a time when tensions are high between the U.S. and Canada after he threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on all Canadian products.

In a letter shared on her social media platform X, Freeland revealed that Canadian PM Justin Trudeau had offered her a different Cabinet position after deciding she would no longer serve as Finance Minister.
