The Sambhal communal riots in 1978 reportedly caused many Hindu families to flee from the area and shut the temples before they moved. Locals said that 25-30 Hindu families were displaced due to the riots.

The decision to re-open the riots cases follows chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s remarks in the state assembly on Monday that 184 Hindus were killed in the 1978 communal riots, which had lasted for more than two months.
