Hollywood star Margaret Qualley has revealed that the prosthetics she wore in the critically-acclaimed horror movie “The Substance” caused so much damage to her skin that it took about a year to recover.

Margaret Qualley is opening up about the long-lasting effects she suffered while filming for 'The Substance.' The actress, who plays Sue in the body horror film, recently shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that her skin was damaged for nearly a year after filming wrapped.

The Substance costume designer Emmanuelle Youchnovski revealed in an interview with Next Best Picture that one of Margaret Qualley’s outfits as Sue in the Golden Globe-nominated body horror masterpiece was inspired by the “Houdini” singer, as well as Beyoncé.

In The Substance, Margaret Qualley's character turns into an overnight superstar. So naturally, the film's costume director Emmanuelle Youchnovski turned to some real-life idols for inspiration - including Beyoncé and Dua Lipa.

Her costar, Demi Moore, previously revealed that her prosthetics work could take over nine hours a day — with up to 14 pieces “glued” to her face alone.

While Margaret Qualley has garnered high praise for her performance in 2024’s The Substance, she has revealed that the extensive amount of prosthetics that were required for the film took a toll on her skin.
