HILLSDALE, N.J. (AP) — A second small earthquake rattled the New York metropolitan area on Tuesday within several days of another. The 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck a little after noon near suburban Hillsdale, New Jersey, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of the Bronx in New York City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

While earthquakes are relatively uncommon in the Northeast, the events highlight the region's ongoing seismic activity.

Multiple earthquakes shook Southern California hours after a tremor was felt on the East Coast on Aug. 5, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey. One quake hit Rialto, California, in the evening hours on Aug.

A magnitude 3.5 earthquake struck in San Bernardino County on Tuesday afternoon, causing shaking felt throughout Southern California. It happened at around 4:55 p.m. nearly four miles from Rialto, according to the United States Geological Survey. Heavy shaking was felt in the immediate area, in cities like Fontana and Rancho Cucamonga.

A minor, 2.7-magnitude earthquake struck in New Jersey on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The temblor happened at 12:11 p.m. Eastern about 1 mile southwest of Hillsdale, N.J., data from the agency shows. The quake followed a slightly larger quake in the same area Saturday night.
