Multiple firefighters have been shot while responding to a brush fire near Coeur d'Alene, Id., in what appeared to be an ambush, local fire officials said Sunday.

Authorities say at least two people were killed and the sniper was unleashing barrages of gunfire over several hours. The governor called the attack a “heinous” assault.
