Lake-effect snow develops from narrow bands of clouds that form when cold, dry arctic air passes over a large, relatively mild lake.
Lake-effect snow flurries seen in parts of North Texas Wednesday
Lake-effect snow is most common near the Great Lakes, but while rare in North Texas, it can happen here too. Lake-effect snow was expected to be possible in areas south and southeast of the larger North Texas lakes, such as Lake Lewisville or Lake Ray Hubbard.

Some of the snow we saw on Wednesday morning was lake-effect snow. Moisture from area lakes met with the cold air and formed bands of snow. We saw lake-effect snow form off of Lewisville, Grapevine and Eagle Mountain Lake.
