A land speed racer competing at Utah's Salt Flats died Aug. 3 while attempting a speed record, event organizers said.

A driver going 283 mph trying to set a land speed record during a racing event at Utah’s famed Bonneville Salt Flats died Sunday after he lost control of his rocket-like vehicle called the Speed Demon.

Chris Raschke, 60, was reportedly piloting the Speed Demon 3 at nearly 300 mph when he lost control of the specially designed vehicle.
