The best song about a frog ever written, “Joy to the World” by my dad Hoyt Axton. Rumor has it, the lyrics were originally “Jeremiah was a prophet” but he changed it to “a frog”. Whether that was true or not, everyone agrees that the lyrics were only meant to be placeholders, but they ended up sticking & the rest is history. If you want to hear more Hoyt stories and tunes plus originals, come on out to The Autry this Thursday 5/15 at 6PM! #mattaxton #mattaxtonmusic #hoytaxton #americanamusic #th

Closing out the evening in Nashville with everyone’s favorite frog song, “Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog” aka “Joy to the World”! It’s funny to think that my dad, Hoyt Axton, came up with the lyrics to “Joy to the World” on the spot in the recording studio! At the time, they were only meant to be placeholders & he was going to go back & change them when he had a chance to write the “real” lyrics. But somehow they stuck & the song ended up becoming a #1 hit for the band Three Dog Night! We are currently

Here’s another clip of my dad Hoyt Axton on the TV show ‘WKRP in Cincinnati’ playing his song “Jealous Man.” This episode aired in 1979 right around the time his album ‘A Rusty Old Halo’ came out. One of the singles from that album was the song “Della & the Dealer”, which was featured twice in this episode. “Jealous Man” was an older song from his 1976 album ‘Fearless’ but it sure fit the storyline! This guest starring role as TJ Watson, the aspiring country singer & former boyfriend of Jennifer

Happy Tuesday Tribute! Here’s a rare video of my dad Hoyt Axton playing “The Devil” live during a concert in 1981 that was aired on the German TV show “Musikladen.” “The Devil” first appeared as a track on my dad’s album ‘Country Anthem’ in 1971. This was one of his earlier albums & no songs from it charted. However, he also released the ‘Joy to the World’ album in 1971 & that one contained his versions of “Joy to the World” & “Never Been to Spain” which became big hits for Three Dog Night that

Here’s my dad Hoyt Axton & his band playing “Joy to the World” on Austin City Limits in 1979. “Joy to the World” is the biggest hit my dad wrote. He gave it to the rock band Three Dog Night, who put it on their album ‘Naturally’ which was released at the end of 1970 & again in 1971 as a single. Their version of the song reached #1 on US Billboard Hot 100 chart & spent six weeks in that spot. It was eventually certified gold by the RIAA. The band almost didn’t take the song, calling it “silly” an

Happy Tuesday Tribute! Today’s video is of my dad Hoyt Axton & his band performing “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” on Austin City Limits in 1979. “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” is a Christian hymn from 1907 that was popularized in country & folk music by The Carter Family in 1935. Their rewritten version was called “Can the Circle Be Unbroken.” Other popular versions/covers have been released by Bill Monroe, Bob Dylan, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, & The Doors. My dad’s version can be found on his ‘L
