A new 2-mile highway linking I-5 and the Port of Tacoma is coming and here’s an animation of what it will look like. Part of the SR 167 Completion Project, the highway will move freight more reliably to and from the port while taking truck traffic off local roads. Construction starts in mid-2022 and is scheduled to be completed in 2026. Once it’s done, the final project to complete the rest of the unfinished SR 167 between I-5 and Puyallup will get going. Didn't have a chance to share this one on Monday but thought it was worth sharing today. A look at some of the work our crews did after US 2 Stevens Pass reopened yesterday to try to keep the highway passable. Just a bit of snow up there. Of course, the highway closed later Monday due to another avalanche east of the summit and remains closed this morning (see the post on our page from Monday for details). We'll provide an update on the closure as soon as we hear more from the field today. | WSD

We're doing a test run of supplementing our traffic cameras with a team of birds who are reporting back what they're seeing. While they have a bit more flexibility than cameras and can move pretty fast, they're also easily distracted by potential food - though so am I. Anyway, here's one of the team, a red-tailed hawk (according to the Department of Fish and Wildlife) keeping an eye on I-5 in north Seattle. A little wildlife for a Thursday morning. Our camera located about a quarter-mile off highway captured these images of a bobcat over a period between late December and January. This gives us a sense of wildlife activity that happens away from the road, providing a baseline to compare vs what we see near highways and at animal crossings.
