St Madoes Stone dates to the eighth century, and the Picts. It’s a class 2 Pictish stone, meaning that it was carved following the introduction of Christianity, and incorporates Christian symbolism. A ring-headed cross dominates the front of the stone, surrounded by biting dogs and lion-like creatures. While the 1200 year old original stands in the National Museum in Edinburgh to protect it, this is an incredible replica. Carved by Barry Grove in 2000, it gives us the opportunity to see how these would have looked to the Picts (inhabitants of much of Scotland from 300AD to 900AD) when they were first carved.
