Within our breeding program, Leader Dog moms and Leader Dog dads are selected to continue the Leader Dog mission and pass on ideal traits to their puppies. This process primes the puppies that are destined to become a partner to someone who is blind or low vision. From one particular litter of eight, five went on to become working Leader Dogs and two were selected as breeding stock dogs. The potential of these dogs is only achieved with the help of volunteer breeding hosts and puppy raisers. Lea

This is what happens when a dog doesn’t have a calm, confident leader in their life. The German Shepherd in this video is reactive, anxious, and clearly unsure of what to do when another dog approaches. He has instinctually taken the leader position that his owner left vacant, even though it causes stress because he wasn't born to lead. But watch the body language of the other dog. He's calm, confident, and grounded. No fear, no tension, no big reactions, not wanting to fight.

The term "pack leader" is probably one of the most polarizing terms in the dog world that oftentimes has a different meaning depending on who you ask. Some believe the term "pack leader" means a dictator, someone who regularly dominates their dog through physical dominance dispays, makes dogs do things based on fear, does no positive reinforcement, and only punishes dogs. Sounds crazy, but many people in the dog world actually view "pack leader" that way. Many are also incredibly misinformed on

We need more of this in the world, dog owners who are respectful of each other, supportive, and putting in the effort to help their dogs overcome their behavioral issues. In my humble opinion, if a dog doesn't view their human as a leader/parent-figure, that human should NOT be introducing their dog to any new dogs or puppies. Why? If the dog believes they are in the leader position in the relationship, that means they are the ones who give protection and direction. They believe they are the final decision maker. If you bring a puppy into a home with a dog who believes they are the leader/parent-figure, the dog will decide what he/she wants to do with the puppy.

This is difficult to watch because both the child and the dog are receiving very poor leadership from their adult humans. A child is sitting and even jumping on a dog who’s clearly growling and uncomfortable. And the adults? Just letting it happen. Why? They clearly aren't aware. This isn’t just a lack of leadership… it’s a failure to protect and direct both the child and the dog. It teaches the child that ignoring a dog’s warning signs is okay. This can lead to doing thi

Here’s a glimpse into some of the long line work I do with a dog who has no idea how to follow a human on leash. As you can see it’s pretty sloppy when you start this activity so don’t give up if it starts a bit messy. That’s normal! Be patient and give your dog the opportunity to figure things out. In reality, you are playing a game of follow the leader that the dog doesn’t know how to play yet. In the beginning I don’t use food with a dog like Darla who is all over the place. I find value in a

Take a quick walk with us on Leader Dog’s practice course! The practice course is located at the back of Leader Dog’s campus. It spans from the Residence Building to the Canine Development Center. This is where the dogs in training are introduced to guiding in harness. A few months later, it will come full circle when the clients take their first walk with their new guide dog on the practice course! Why is it that we so many of our clients have worked with dog trainers in the past but have gotten little to no results with their dogs? We actually have a dog currently in our Behavior Optimization Retreat, our form of "board & train," that went through 6, that's right, 6 trainers before working with us. How is it possible that 6 trainers failed to get results for what I considered a pretty easy dog to work with? They tried a specific dog training method that they use on all dogs, regardless of

The words "Pack Leader" are probably one of the most misinterpreted and misrepresented words in the dog world. Let's be clear about it. Dogs come from wolves. In nature, the pack leaders in a pack of wolves are the breeding male AND female. In other words, they are the parents who lead their offspring. While they are both leaders, they use a group style leadership, a division of labor, where mom has certain roles and dad has certain roles within their leadership group. The Moms role is primarily

This is a situation where the leader/parent-figure needs to step in for both the dog and the child. This dog is extremely tolerant of the child who is relentlessly hitting the dog. The child clearly doesn’t know any better, so we can’t blame the child for their behavior. The dog is showing extreme tolerance while being hit and trying to avoid the situation. Where is the parent? Is the parent filming? Who knows, but someone needs to assume the leader/parent-figure position when it comes to the in

Generally speaking, there are 3 pack positions that dogs fall into. Front, middle, and back positions. Front position: the leader position, sets rules, boundaries, and limitations, final decision maker. Middle position: Similar to HR department. Keep pack together. Prevent front of pack from getting too strong, back of pack from being too weak. Higher play drive. Back position: The alarm system for the pack, alert to potential dangers, more sensitive and unsure about new things. Now, let me agai

Leadership is something that humans are currently struggling with when it comes to both children and dogs. To be a great leader for a dog or a child, we have to gain full trust and respect of that dog or child. We have to love that dog or child enough to put our personal needs and emotions aside to do what's best for them. If any of those are broken, it will prevent a dog or a child from viewing us as a leader they can count on to guide them in all scenarios in life. Achieving that requires us t

Motivation is definitely something that we want to be able to provide for our dogs. What I've noticed in the "dog training" world is that when most trainers talk about motivation, it's usually one of two things, food or toys. What is often never discussed is the relationship with their human and whether or not the dog views the human as leader/parent-figure. When a dog is motivated to do things for their leader/parent-figure, adding toys or food for even more motivation is icing on the

The dogs nose provides their strongest sense, their sense of smell. In puppyhood, I do a ton of work engaging the nose to create the behaviors I'm looking for and then "mark" those behaviors. As you can see, I engage the nose of Nico, my German Shepherd, my two puppies Marty and Dawson, and one of my clients Presa Canario puppies who was staying with me for out Puppy Enrichment Program. As I walk away from them and they come closer to the smell, I'm saying "come" to mark the behavior th

Understanding the concept of Nose-> Eyes-> Ears is critical to understanding how to teach your dog things like a recall. A recall is being able to signal your dog to come to you no matter what they are doing. It's something everyone with a dog should have the ability to do. Many people realize this but do not teach it the most ideal way, in my humble opinion. What usually happens is that people try all sorts of different noises or movements to trigger their puppy to come to them. The

When it comes to leadership with dogs, people often ask “how do I become a better leader?!” One of the most simple (and underrated) leadership protocols in our opinion is teaching dogs to respect thresholds in the house. Doors, gates, and the crate specifically. We teach this not only for safety purposes, but also to teach dogs to respect rules. We teach it day one, session one, with all dogs who go through our training program. It’s so easy to do, and you can get this done in one session histor
