Verity came with the small breeding herd in 2012, rescued from slaughter. Her son, Merlin, was almost 1 year old and she was heavily pregnant with Zor. The bond between Mother and foal is very strong in the foal’s early life. A dam in the wild would naturally wean around 9 months after birth but the mare-foal bond continues until the yearlings begin to form bonds in other social groups, (around 1.5–2.5 years of age). In traditional breeding practice, foals are artificially weaned at a younger ag
